The Cruise--Details

I didn't include more details in the prior "The Cruise" post for two reasons. 1)  I didn't think anyone would be interested; and 2)  This trip didn't include much of the normal topics:  good beer, good coffee or John-style travel. But there are details, which may be useful to some people contemplating how such a trip is put together. On the first day of the trip, we drove three hours to pick up my mother in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  At 85, she isn't comfortable driving for long distances and hadn't flown for many years. We then drove 3 1/2 more hours to Chicago, where we checked into the Wyndham, where you can get a room that includes the cost of parking for up to 12 days.   We were up early on the hotel shuttle to O'Hare, where we then boarded the a non-stop American Airlines flight to New Orleans. Here, we checked into a Hampton Inn near the port.  My mother was pretty tired, so Julia and I went out for a Cajun dinner and live music.   Rememberi...

Harvest

For many years, Julia and I have followed a tradition to harvest our Christmas tree from one of the many area Christmas tree farms.  This year, we tried out a new place:  Miller's Christmas Trees near Rio, Wisconsin.

Julia is always very excited about these excursions.  I might be a little less excited.

I trudged down the rows of Christmas trees in search of the perfect little white pine.

This one will work.

No chain saw  necessary

Next, we were off for a celebratory margarita and dinner at a new Mexican restaurant in Columbus, Wisconsin.

Mine proved to be a little bigger and stronger than I expected.  Since I was driving, Julia offered to use my regular margarita to dilute her jalapeno margarita.  The food was excellent (for small town Wisconsin).

John,

Michelle noticed a copy of *Rascal* in the free pile at the doctors' office. Sterling North's story is one of the few that's held up over the decades.

Wiki says he was born in Edgerton, WI which, in 1918, sounds idyllic.

How's the weather?

Edgerton is still a nice little town--just south of Madison. It's one of the only areas of the state where they still grow tobacco. It's only 45 minutes away, but I haven't been there in many years.

I haven't read Rascal, but I did have an older Iowa cousin who had a pet racoon. He used to carry it around on his shoulder until it bit him really hard on the ear. His mother (a nurse) said that the critter had to go.

The weather sucks (cold rain), but we did manage to get out for a hike this week. I need to get back in the habit of blogging. It's harder when we don't go anywhere.
