Along the River

Yesterday would have been Justin’s 24th birthday. I haven’t been sleeping well, and there are so many memories in the house. This morning, we headed to Iowa and set up camp a few steps from the shore of the Mississippi River.  The campground is quiet mid-week, and it was a perfect day in the Upper Midwest: temperatures in the mid 70’s. A haze from the Canadian wildfires masked an otherwise sunny day.  We’ve already seen our first barge.  There is something very peaceful about sitting in a camp chair and watching the river flow by.

Another Scamping Trip

I was only home for a few days/—long enough to restock and hit the road again—sólo this time. My original plan was to head west to Wyoming and South Dakota, but the heat, crowds, and long days of driving gave me second thoughts.

Instead, I’m  still planning a longer trip but closer to home and with longer stays. Tonight I’m camped about 30 minutes south of La Crosse, Wi, a stone’s throw away from the Mississippi River.

Some stormy weather is on its way, but it’s a great summer day for now.

Good decision. Fall sounds better for those trips.

As John Muir said, “The mountains are calling, and I must go—but maybe not during the peak of tourist season.”
