The Cruise--Details

I didn't include more details in the prior "The Cruise" post for two reasons. 1)  I didn't think anyone would be interested; and 2)  This trip didn't include much of the normal topics:  good beer, good coffee or John-style travel. But there are details, which may be useful to some people contemplating how such a trip is put together. On the first day of the trip, we drove three hours to pick up my mother in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  At 85, she isn't comfortable driving for long distances and hadn't flown for many years. We then drove 3 1/2 more hours to Chicago, where we checked into the Wyndham, where you can get a room that includes the cost of parking for up to 12 days.   We were up early on the hotel shuttle to O'Hare, where we then boarded the a non-stop American Airlines flight to New Orleans. Here, we checked into a Hampton Inn near the port.  My mother was pretty tired, so Julia and I went out for a Cajun dinner and live music.   Rememberi...

Day 2 at Wells

The mosquitoes descended upon us last night and drove me into the Scamp at dusk. The morning sunrise was quiet and windless. The skies were hazy with smoke from the Canadian fires.

For breakfast, I prepared Krusties blueberry pancakes, which I will not do again. The blueberry “chips” left a film on the tops of our mouths, which made me guess that the blueberries may have been developed in a lab instead of on a bush.

After breakfast, we took a long walk on the shore. A pleasant offshore breeze kept the mosquitoes down.

Wells is a very nice Michigan state park and uncrowded on a Monday morning. One can venture into the woods.

Or play a game of horseshoes.

We would stay here again (on a weekday).

Wouldjou look at that form! The stance! The determination. It's a RINGER!!!!

Is that a regulation distance? It looks farther than usual.

Mosquitoes here too! It's an exceptionally wet Spring. Snow melt has the Humboldt River threatening to flood.

It felt like regulation distance. The angle of the camera and shadow make it seem longer. All of the Michigan state parks on this trip have horseshoes. During my first summer as a lawyer, I played in a clay pit horseshoe bar league with my brother-in-law Scott. We weren’t especially good, but we had fun.
