Starkweather Beer Company

When I moved back to Madison to attend law school in 1987, we moved to a crappy little apartment near the banks of Starkweather Creek on the unfashionable east side.  Today, the east side is booming, and one of the newer brewpubs is called Starkweather Beer Company. It was Saint Pat's Day.  While Guinness is a decent light-bodied stout, I opted for Starkweather's dry Irish Stout, named "Jamestown Jackdaw." Coming in at 5.9 ABV, it had a malty chewable backbone.  It's a new favorite stout for me.  Julia had Late Winter Haze, a New England IPA that didn't have as much fruitiness as she likes in a hazy.  It was still well-executed. We walked down the street to the Harmony Bar, where Julia enjoyed a complete corn beef and cabbage dinner.  I opted for the Reuben sandwich.  Mine was washed down with an Edmund Fitzgerald porter from Great Lakes Brewing.  Julia enjoyed her Chaos Pattern IPA from 3 Sheeps Brewing.  Both are great beers. Late Summer Update

The highlight of the last few weeks was winning the local pickleball tournament.  Yeah, it's been a little slow in the travel and hiking department.

Not that we haven't traveled.  Last week, we drove a couple of hours to the Appleton area to attend the funeral of Julia's stepfather, Bob.  Both of her parents have passed, and there is just one stepmother left.  Bob lived a very full life and to the age of 93, passing quietly in his own home surrounded by family.  You can't ask much more than that.

We also had some Justin-related travel, which resulted in securing an apartment close to Justin's doctors and the hospital in Madison.  With one step forward, we immediately took a step back when the state balked at Justin's agency's care giving plan.  At this point, we are putting our faith in the agency's experience in getting similar plans eventually approved.  Otherwise, we make be starting from scratch again in that department.  We shall see.

Hiking has been limited to daily training hikes for the Inca Trail, which is coming up later this fall.  We are getting the miles in, but we will not be able to replicate the altitude.

I hope all sorts itself out with Justin.

I also wish I lived at about 6000 feet so those pesky altitude issues would go away!

Congratulations on winning the tournament! Kristen plays three times a week and with that and swimming each day she stays in shape. She's 72.

Thanks, Greg. It will sort itself out one way or another. When it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

That elevation is going to kick our butts. We will have several days to acclimate in Cusco before the hike, which should help.

Thanks. Julia and I both enjoy playing. It's a game that the young or old can play to stay in shape. Until recently, the men's world champ was Zane Navratil, a 26 year old from UW-Whitewater. When we play in Poynette during the winter, there is a 76 year old retired doctor who plays with us.
