Upper Peninsula: Ontanogon

From August 2021

The township of Ontonagon, Michigan is about 1500 people. The people are an interesting sort.  Winters are long here, and you have to be tough to live here.

While there is some great hiking in the nearby Porcupine Mountain State Park, I've hiked there many times before.  I've never stayed in Ontanogon.  During my week at the campground, I took daily walks along Lakeshore Drive to the other side of Ontonagon, which totaled 5-8 miles per day.

This town leans heavily red, and some people have misgivings about the new administration.

Summers are brief in this part of the country, making each sunset like this especially sweet.
